How to Register for VAT in South Africa
A practical guide for South African businesses from BML Accounting & Tax.
What is VAT?
Value-Added Tax (VAT) is charged at 15% on most goods and services supplied in South Africa. Registered vendors collect VAT on behalf of SARS and may claim qualifying input VAT on legitimate business expenses.
Who Must Register?
Compulsory Registration
It is mandatory to register for VAT if:
- Your business carries on an enterprise in South Africa; and
- Your total value of taxable supplies has exceeded R2.3 million in any consecutive 12-month period; or
- You have entered into a written contractual agreement to exceed R2.3 million in taxable supplies within the next 12 months.
Registration must be submitted within 21 business days after reaching or exceeding the mandatory threshold.
Voluntary Registration
You may voluntarily apply for VAT registration if:
- Your total taxable supplies have exceeded R120 000 in the preceding 12-month period; or
- You carry on a commercial enterprise and satisfy specific statutory requirements established by SARS.
Benefits of VAT Registration
- Ability to claim back input VAT on enterprise purchases and overheads.
